Presentation

The Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) is an autonomous and public research institution attached to the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. At national level, the IEO is the only Spanish research institution devoted exclusively to the study of the sea and its biological resources. The main functions of the IEO are:

  • To perform research in the fields of fisheries, marine aquaculture and marine environment.
  • To develop, coordinate, manage and perform research programmes on marine living resources, marine aquaculture and multidisciplinary research with a special focus on the influence of marine environment and environmental changes on living resources.
  • To provide advice and support to the Spanish Government for the management of fisheries and the marine environment, with a view to its sustainable use, preservation and protection.
  • To represent the Spanish Government at international organisations, committees and forums on oceanography, marine sciences and fisheries in coordination with different Spanish Ministries.
  • To promote cooperation in marine research at regional, national and international level to through agreements with private and public entities.

The IEO has a wide geographical distribution, with 9 Oceanographic Centres located in different regions: Vigo, Coruña, Gijón, Santander, Cádiz, Málaga, Murcia, Mallorca, and Tenerife. The headquarters is in Madrid, where there is also an oceanographic laboratory. The IEO staff is made up by more than 450 permanent positions, 60% of them devoted to research and the remainder to administration, together with around 150 staff hired (including researchers and technicians).
